EDITOR'S NOTE: About a year ago I wrote about the WB Disc Rot issue in a Google doc. Recently, I saw someone discuss it in one of the Facebook groups I frequent. Since it's easier to share websites on social media, I've decided to remake the Google Doc as a blog post for convenience. What follows is pretty much word-for-word the same: but, like the Google Doc, I'll update it with relevant information.
Introduction
In an age where streaming services have been removing beloved movies and shows on a regular basis, many have decided to return to DVD and Blu-Ray as a more reliable alternative; but recently there have been alarming reports of certain Warner Bros. DVDs succumbing to the dreaded disc rot.
Disc rot is a phenomenon when discs (CDs, Laserdiscs, DVDs etc.), start to break down and become unplayable – usually caused by improper manufacturing.
As with any optical media format, disc-rot is always a possibility – since there will always be a few defective copies in a batch of MILLIONS – but it’s not very common. The most well-known examples come from the Pre-DVD era; such as the MCA/Disco-Vision titles from the late-70s/early-80s, and most infamously the DADC Sony plant in the US - meaning most Sony/Columbia Laserdiscs from the 90s are prone to disc rot.
However once DVD arrived, disc rot cases dropped dramatically in terms of percentages, and only seemed to be confined to very early DVD releases in the late-90s when manufacturers were still figuring out the format.
When it comes to modern physical media formats like DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD, disc rot is extremely rare and not usually something you need to worry about as a collector. In most cases, if DVDs, Blu-Rays and 4K discs are properly stored, they can last multiple decades. I have several DVDs from over 20 years ago, and they play perfectly fine.
However, there have recently been reports of WB discs from the mid-2000s (made between approximately 2005-2008, trickling into 2009) are going bad. Originally this problem was only discussed on message boards and group chats, but it soon became the subject of several physical media YouTubers - most notably Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader – before exploding into public consciousness with an article by JoBlo.com that went viral. The JoBlo article sent shockwaves through the online physical media collector community, and many began to panic and wonder if their beloved DVDs were affected. Some articles misreported the situation claiming ALL DVDs or ALL WB DVDs are prone to rot. JoBlo itself did several follow up articles that seem to engage in fear mongering about all your physical media potentially rotting.
Therefore, as a physical media collector myself, I decided to help the situation. Don’t let this issue discourage you from supporting physical media: this only applies to a fraction of releases at ONE particular studio. The more research I’ve done on this, one thing becomes clear: the WB disc rot situation IS REAL, and as a collector you should BE VERY CAREFUL when buying WB DVDs from this time frame, but once you know what to look out for, you should be okay.
I should also note that this rot issue only applies to DVDs – Blu-Rays from the same time period are unaffected. Also, this only applies to DVDs from Region 1 (US and Canada), DVDs from other areas like Region 2 (Europe) and Region 4 (Australia & New Zealand), are unaffected by this particular issue and/or are subject to their own manufacturing practices.
How Do I Tell If My Disc is Prone to Rot?
There are a few key ways to tell if you have a “rotter” on your hands.
The cause of this disc rot crisis seems to stem from one particular manufacturing plant in Olyphant, Pennsylvania where Warner Bros. was manufacturing many of their DVD box-sets at the time.
This plant was cutting corners, and using cheap glue in the manufacturing of their discs – now hundreds of Warner discs (and a few 20th Century-Fox and MGM titles) are now malfunctioning. Worst-case scenario: if you put the disc in your player, it’s completely unplayable. More often the disc will freeze and lock up somewhere in the middle of the film/show. In other cases, you’ll only be able to access the menu, but the feature doesn’t play, or the extras won’t play – if it’s a double feature only one film will play, etc.
Fortunately, not all Warner Bros DVDs were manufactured at this Pennsylvania plant: Warner Bros. manufactured many of their discs at other plants as well, including one in Canada, and most notably the Technicolor plant in Mexico. Fortunately, the plant in Pennsylvania is no longer in business, and all WB discs made AFTER 2010 were made at the Mexico plant, and don’t suffer from this disc rot issue.
Therefore, the easiest way to identify whether or not a disc may be defective is to check the back of the box. If there is a faded MADE IN MEXICO on the back of the cover, you should be fine. Also check the copyright date on the back of the box to see whether it falls into the 2006–2008 time frame… if it’s beforehand, or after 2010 you should be fine. However, the cover doesn’t always clearly state where the disc was made, and while a DVD could potentially have a copyright date of (say) 2004, you may have a copy from a latter run pressed in 2007.
Therefore, another way you can check if a disc you own might be prone to rot is to look at the manufacturing and identification codes on the disc itself.
In the middle of the disc (very close to the hole in the middle where you put your finger) there's tiny writing that says ‘IFPI’ - if it’s followed by “2U” and several other numbers and/or letters: that indicates it was made at the Pennsylvania plant and MAY be prone to rot.

If there isn’t a IFPI code or it has different numbers and letters, that indicates it was made at a DIFFERENT plant and should not be affected by this disc rot issue. For example, if it has the letters “KK” instead of “2U” that indicates it was made at the Mexico plant and should be fine.
The best way to check for disc rot is simply to put the disc in the player and see for yourself. Rather than watching DOZENS of hour-long movies, or HUNDREDS of TV episodes – to save yourself time you can check by fast forwarding through them. If they come to an abrupt freeze in the middle of a film/episode, you have a disc rot problem. If it makes it all the way through without any errors, you’re fine (make sure to do this with the extras as well).
How Do I Buy a Replacement for a Rotted Disc? / How Can I Avoid Buying a Rotted Disc?
The way I see it there are three major options you have for buying a replacement, or avoiding rotted discs.
OPTION No. 1: If a rotted title has received a Blu-Ray and/or 4K upgrade… GET THE UPGRADE.
This is the EASIEST method. Like I said before this particular rot issue only affects DVDs - Blu-Rays and 4Ks are completely unaffected, and over HALF of the affected titles have been at least upgraded to Blu-Ray. If you for some reason don’t have a Blu-Ray or 4K player yet, I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting one since they’re now very affordable (especially Blu-Ray Players) and – in case you didn’t know already – 4K and Blu-Ray players also play DVDs as well; so if your disc works fine, you don’t have to upgrade.
Some may worry about whether or not certain extras from the DVD are carried over. Fortunately, WB tends to be very good at carrying over extras from previous releases. For example, one of the big "rotters" is the Superman Ultimate Collector’s Edition Tin DVD box-set… however it’s Blu-Ray equivalent - Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology – contains ALL the bonus material from that set. Same thing with the Batman: The Complete Animated Series Blu-Ray.
Sadly, there’s a handful of examples such as The Flintstones and Friends Complete Series Blu-Ray boxsets that don’t carry over all the bonus material. Therefore, check websites like Blu-Ray.com and The Digital Bits to see whether or not all the material has been carried over. If a certain extra hasn’t, and your copy still works, keep it just in case.
But what if a title hasn’t received a Blu-Ray upgrade yet? Well that leads us to….
OPTION No. 2: If a particular DVD set is still in print – Buy a Modern Repackaged version or a Warner Archive MOD re-pressing.
Fortunately for many of the most popular titles, the original DVD versions are still in print, and as previously stated, discs made AFTER 2010 were made at a different plant in Mexico and are unaffected by this rot issue.
Take, for example, one of the major affected tiles - the excellent Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs - many of which contain shorts that haven’t yet been upgraded to Blu-Ray. Fortunately, ALL 6 volumes are still in print, and modern repackaged versions are fine. I recently bought the repackaged version of Volume 4 (one of the big "rotters"), and it works perfectly. The same thing is true for the three volumes of the Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection DVDs, as well as Complete Series boxset repackagings of shows like the George Reeves Adventures of Superman series, or more modern shows like Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain.
You can often tell the difference between the original and modern pressings by the packaging: the original pressings tend to come in more elaborate cardboard fold out packaging… while modern pressings tend to come in a Standard DVD case: MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE LATTER. Yes, you won’t get the nice fancier packaging… but at least your discs are guaranteed to work
When shopping online you can’t always tell what the packaging looks like, but Amazon conveniently tends to put “(Repackaged/DVD)” in the product title - or something to that effect: MAKE SURE YOU BUY THIS VERSION.
In the rare cases when they don’t, you can also check the date in the description: if it’s from the 2000s, AVOID, but if it says 2010 or later it’s probably fine.
Another common repackaging is the TCM Greatest Classic Films 4-Disc packs. These re-releases (with a handful of exceptions mentioned in the list) also tend to be okay.
For many DVD releases of classic films from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, throughout the 2010s most of them were put back into print as Warner Archive Manufactured-On-Demand DVD-Rs. This includes many individual films in numerous WB boxsets, as well as a few multi-disc collections in their entirety - such as the Superman Theatrical Serials Collection, the first three Forbidden Hollywood volumes, and some animated offerings like the three original Popeye the Sailor DVDs, and Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection. Much like the modern repackaged versions, these MOD represses are perfectly fine; I myself had purchased these versions of the Forbidden Hollywood, Popeye the Sailor, and Droopy sets, and I have no issues with them.
In most cases it’s very easy to tell the difference between the original pressings and the MOD versions: since most of the MODs have the Warner Archive banner at the top of the cover. However, there are a handful of cases where they don’t, so if you’re shopping online, once again check the product dates in the description.
If shopping in store, there’s a handful of ways you can tell, but the easiest way is to look at the back cover: if there’s a small box towards the bottom with the text “wb.com/warnerarchive” in it – then it’s a MOD repressing and will be okay. If not, avoid.
Other websites such as MovieZyng only sell the modern Warner Archive MOD and modern repackaged versions, and label them clearly at the top of the page as "Warner Archive" and "Warner Reissue". If your uncertain about buying from Amazon, I'd highly recommend buying from MovieZyng instead.
Also keep in mind, with both the Modern Repackages and MOD re-pressings - the discs themselves are EXACTLY THE SAME as the original pressings, they just come in cheaper packaging and made using better manufacturing practices.
The only exception that I know of is the 2017 Hanna-Barbera Diamond Edition DVDs, where (except for the three INDIVIDUAL Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection volumes – but not the 4-Disc collected edition) WB saw fit to make entirely new master discs from scratch - with fewer discs per set, horrible menu design that looks like something out of an Atari 2600 game, and worst of all NOT INCLUDE ANY OF THE EXTRAS. This especially stings, because with shows like The Flintstones the only way to watch certain extras (since many of them weren’t carried over to the Blu-Ray) is on rot-prone DVDs. But this is a rare exception, and most Repackaged versions and all MOD re-pressings are exactly the same.
With Modern Repackages and Warner Archive MOD-DVD-R re-pressings – along with Blu-Ray upgrades - AT LEAST 75% OF THE AFFECTED TITLES ARE REPLACEABLE in some capacity.
However there is a VERY SMALL percentage of titles that are no longer in print, and have not received a Warner Archive MOD repressing or a Blu-Ray upgrade. This is the most frustrating situation and brings us too…
Option 3 - ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT: Try Buying a Standalone Copy and Hope to God it Works.
If the previous two options aren’t available, your absolute last resort is to try and buy a copy online and just hope you get a copy that works. Apparently most standalone versions from box sets ARE USUALLY OKAY – since, while a lot of the box sets were pressed in the Pennsylvania plant, a lot of standalone copies were pressed at other plants. However this isn’t always a guarantee, since sometimes manufacturers would just take discs from the box set, and release them as individual titles.
In addition you can try looking for the warning signs of a rotted disc that I previously mentioned above. Of course in most cases the only way to check for these indicators is if (a) you’re buying it used online, or (b) you open the copy and check for yourself - and by that point you’ve already purchased it and you may end up with another defective disc.
It’s basically a game of Russian Roulette as to whether you’ll buy a copy that actually works. Fortunately Warner Archive is constantly re-releasing titles on Blu-Ray, so it might just be better if you wait until they release a Blu-Ray version.
Can I Get a Free Replacement from Warner Bros? (aka The Official Warner Bros Response)
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 - 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs.However, according to customers, whether WB is following up on this promise is (to put it mildly) mixed. Some people have reported to have gotten replacements from Warner Bros, while others have not. Some have either gotten no response at all, or have been asked to show receipts (and good luck still having a receipt for something you bought over 15 years ago).
Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title. However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value.
Consumers with affected product[s] can contact the customer support team at whv@wbd.com.”
I have also yet to hear of anyone being “offered an exchange for a title of like-value” – from the reports I’ve read Warner Bros will only send you Repackaged DVDs or Warner Archive MOD if they have it in stock. Blu-Ray upgrades you have to buy on your own.
According to Bill Hunt (The Digital Bits) this reportedly due to WB’s Customer Service being gutted by Discovery, and it being run by a single person.
One Facebook user (Byron Braynon) who got replacements recommended emails using the following process:
If this doesn’t work, the worst case scenario is that you may have to re-buy these titles out of your own pocket.
Also Note: This replacement program is only available to residents to the United States and Canada. Other countries are out of luck.
Conclusion
Don’t let this recent disc rot scare discourage you from collecting your favourite movies or shows on physical media. Disc rot is still extremely rare and most DVDs from 20 years ago (if well taken care of) play perfectly fine - this situation with Warner Bros. DVDs from the mid-2000s are the rare exception. Fortunately AT LEAST 75% percent of the affected titles on this list have either received Blu-Ray upgrades with all the same special features (except when noted) or are still in print as either Repackaged DVDs or Warner Archive MOD DVD-Rs. Once you know what to look out for you should be fine.
A few years back YouTuber Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader compiled a list of WB titles that are known to have disc rot issues with - I used his list and took it a step further, by adding where you can get replacements and/or upgrades. Hopefully this list will also be used for newcomers to avoid buying rotted copies in the future. Also just because you have a particular title on this list doesn’t automatically mean it will go bad - maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and got a copy made at a different plant - maybe you have a copy made before the affected time period. Still it would be a good idea to check your discs to make sure they’re still okay.

In his original list Damn Fool Idealistic Crusade included Wally Gator: The Complete Series. I don’t know what the issues with that set are, but since it’s a Warner Archive MOD DVD-R from 2019, it’s probably unrelated to this disc rot problem. Regardless, the series received a Blu-Ray (here) upgrade in 2025 and is fine.

In his original list Damn Fool Idealistic Crusade included The Maltese Falcon (3 Disc Special Edition) in the standalone section. Yet later in his Home Video History video of The Maltese Falcon he said the standalone copies were fine, so I’m a little confused. Regardless, The Maltese Falcon has received Blu-Ray (here) and 4K (here) upgrades and are fine, with the Blu-Ray carrying over all the bonus material from this set… except for the two previous film adaptations.
